Mini-colloquium MC-30 on “Material research with neutrons” during CMD31 conference Braga (Portugal) on September 2-6, 2024

The CMD-General Conference of the Condensed Matter Division of EPS (https://cmd31.sci-meet.net/) will be held in-person conference at the Altice Forum in Braga, Portugal, from September 2nd through September 6th, 2024.

CMD31 is an international conference covering all aspects of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Physics, including both hard and soft condensed matter physics, liquid physics, biophysics, materials science, quantum physics, low temperature physics, strongly correlated materials, semiconductor physics, magnetism, superconductivity, and many others others.

In the frame of the conference the mini-colloquium MC30 - Materials Research with Neutrons (https://cmd31.sci-meet.net/mini-colloquia), has been organized as a collaboration between the University of Aveiro (Mariela Nolasco), the Institut Laue-Langevin (Andrea Piovano), the University of Coimbra (Maria Marques) and the University of Trento (Marco Zanatta).

The scope of this mini-colloquium is spreading knowledge within the application of neutron techniques to materials research and foster scientific interdisciplinary cooperation between physicists, chemists, material scientists and biologists.

We encourage you to submit an abstract with your latest research with neutrons to this mini-colloquium.
The abstract submission is available in https://cmd31.sci-meet.net/abstract-submission until the 15th April.

Magnetism in Portugal 2024 – School of Metrology in Magnetism / 1 e 2 de Fevereiro

We are pleased to announce the event Magnetism in Portugal 2024 – School of Metrology in Magnetism, that will be held in the Lisbon area, at Bobadela, Portugal, 1 - 2 February 2024, and organised by Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear, Instituto Superior Técnico, Univ. Lisboa.

This year our aim is to offer to students, young researchers, and a broader representation of scientists and stakeholders, the opportunity to know the state-of-the-art and the measurement challenges in a broad variety of topics related with magnetism, while interacting with active research groups from different Portuguese institutions.

The School is structured in three different modules:

General lectures (45 min + 10 min discussion): This module focuses on general concepts of metrology, the system of units in magnetism, metrology for quantitative measurements of magnetic properties and instrumentation.

Invited lecturers: (this information will be available soon)

Hands on: Practical and tutorial sections on 3 working topics (Magnetometry, Mössbauer Spectroscopy and Neutron Diffraction) will be presented.

Poster presentation (limited to about 30 posters): With the aim of encouraging discussion and communication, participants will have the opportunity to present their research results as a poster presentation.

NeMPo Group|Organizing periodic Workshop| Neutron and Muons: from Science to Society |

NeMPo (Neutron and Muon Users in Portugal, https://fisica-materia-condensada.spf.pt/NeMPo) is a group of portuguese researchers, founded in 2018, that regularly use neutron and/or muon techniques, comprising members from the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics/Biochemistry, Archaeometry and Engineering.

- The NeMPo Group aims at organizing periodic Workshops, up to 3 - 4 per year, with the duration of one afternoon – Neutron and Muons: from Science to Society.

Building on previous meetings, these workshops will contribute to foster scientific cooperation and spread of knowledge within the NeMPo area of research, as well as to sustain a fruitful contact among members.

- Each workshop will be dedicated to a specific subject, and will comprise up to 5 communications by national and international experts, upon invitation by the organising committee – two 40 min lectures (by senior researchers) and up to three 20 min talks, both followed by a short discussion period (the lectures may be made available online, should the authors give their permission).

- Special emphasis will be given to applications of neutron and muon techniques in diverse areas – such as Physics, Nuclear Technology, Radiation Protection, Materials, Environment, Biology, Medicine or Archaeometry. This will ensure the interest of colleagues outside NeMPo, which are welcome to participate in these events.

- Participation of junior researchers, namely MSc and PhD students as well as undergraduate students, will be encouraged.

- Outreach and dissemination amongst non-experts and non-educated audiences will be sought.

- The program of the Workshops will be available at the NeMPo webpage (https://fisica-materia-condensada.spf.pt/NeMPo), as well as the abstracts of the lectures.

- With a view to prompt a lively discussion after each talk, we encourage the participants to send us their queries prior to the event.

- Finally, we´d like to get the member´s opinion on the following issue: should these workshops be held exclusively online (e.g. via Zoom), in person or mixed (online+in person)? Please choose your preference on our Format Poll until December 3rd.

- The first Neutron&Muon Data Club is scheduled for the 19th January 2022 (15-18 h, GMT) and will be held under the subject: Neutron Scattering Techniques - Research and Applications in Biosciences and Materials: Part I – Applications in Biosciences (1.5 h); Part II - Applications in Materials (1.5 h).

Magnetism in Portugal 2022 – Young Researchers will take place at Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade do Porto (FCUP) on September 12 and 13, 2022.

This year Magnetism in Portugal 2022 is devoted to young researchers, Master, PhD students and young postdoctoral researchers working or interested in different topics of Magnetism. The main goal is to bring together a multi-disciplinary group of young scientists and students from different Portuguese institutions to present and exchange break-through ideas in the field of magnetism.
